The stay-at-home economy continues to thrive as COVID-19 spreads. Frozen buns are one item that’s become a bestseller, as people find ways to avoid going out to buy groceries. As one frozen bun producer reveals, sales are up by as much as 20%.

The rolled-out dough is pressed into a perfect shape by giant rollers. The pork filling is piped inside and the closed-up bun is ready to go. In the shadow of coronavirus, many people are avoiding grocery rounds by buying frozen food online. That’s big money for home delivery services.

Business has gone up 20%. We have to produce about 15,000 frozen buns a day to fulfill online sales. Basically we have people working round the clock.
To keep up with orders, the original requirement to produce 60 buns a minute has gone up to 72 buns a minute. Employees are working four extra hours a day, in shifts late at night and in the early hours, to meet production targets.
To avoid the virus, of course we’re washing hands, but also avoiding touching anything at all. It’s the same with the buns. We reduce any chance of touching it in its fresh or original state. In normal packaging, if one gets messed with, it makes eight or 10 others all go slightly off too. So we decided from the start to package each bun separately.
Now those individually wrapped buns are just what the doctor ordered for stay-at-home shoppers.
